Amazon seller fees explained
Amazon has more fee lines than any other marketplace, but three do most of the work: the referral fee (a percentage by category, usually 15%), the selling plan (Professional at $39.99 a month or Individual at $0.99 per item), and, if you use FBA, the fulfillment fee based on size, weight and, since January 2026, the item's price band.
Media sellers pay a $1.80 closing fee per unit. FBA sellers also pay monthly storage, inbound placement and possibly low-inventory fees that depend on your whole catalog rather than a single sale, so they are not in the per-sale calculator.

Notice how the effective rate falls as the price rises on platforms with fixed fees, and stays flat on pure-percentage platforms. That is the whole story of which marketplace suits cheap versus expensive items.
What changed recently
- FBA fulfillment fees now vary by price band. Small standard items priced $10 to $50 rose $0.25 per unit; large standard $10 to $50 rose $0.05.
- Amazon held US referral and FBA fulfillment fees flat for 2025 with no increases.
All platforms: fee change log.
How to pay less on Amazon
- The Individual plan beats Professional only under 40 sales a month, and it locks you out of advertising and the Buy Box.
- Clothing is the most fee-sensitive category: a $19.99 shirt pays 10%, a $20.01 shirt pays 17%.
- FBA fees are per unit shipped, so multipacks shipped as one unit pay one fulfillment fee.
